The Tote Board - How is it all calculated?

The Tote Board
As the racetrack betting system computers receive and log wagers, the totalisator simultaneously sends the information to the infield tote board. The tote board displays changing odds, results, amount of dollars in various pools, payoff prices and other information. As money is wagered in the win, place, and show pools, the dollar totals are automatically updated in the totalisator system and displayed on the tote board. The win odds are also adjusting as the pool values change and are displayed next to the horse betting number.

Tote boards also display time of race, time of day, minutes left to bet a race, and prices on the other pools, such as Exacta and Daily Double payoffs. Another common display is the probable payouts on Exacta and Quinella combinations; while wagering is being conducted these payouts will fluctuate with the amount of betting activity.
